How to keep your eyes healthy and maintain good eyesight?
The eyes are the windows to the soul, so treat them with love and care to prevent the worsening of eye condition, eye diseases, and potential blindness. Here are a few general eye care tips to keep your eyes healthy.
1. Get regular eye screenings
Be sure to have your eyes checked at least once a year and be aware of any hereditary eye conditions. Adults with no signs or risk factors for eye disease should still get a baseline eye screening at age 40.
2. Stay within a healthy weight range
Being overweight can impact your eye health regardless of whether you are experiencing any symptoms. Conditions such as cataract and thyroid eye disease have been linked to obesity.
You can do so by:
- Having a balanced diet
Eating foods rich in lutein (a vitamin found in leafy greens), omega-3 (oily fish such as tuna and salmon), and zinc (found in cheese, milk, and poultry) can improve your eye health.
- Engaging in regular physical activity
Studies have shown a link between a sedentary lifestyle and a greater risk of glaucoma, a condition that damages your optic nerves and causes blindness.
- You don’t have to walk to the moon and back before you start to notice health improvements. Find out more here.
3. Limit your alcohol intake and stop smoking
Men are advised to drink no more than 21 units of alcohol per week, and no more than 4 units per day. The recommended intake for women is no more than 14 units per week and 3 units per day.
People who smoke and drink excessively may develop loss of vision and develop optic neuropathy and reduced color vision.
Smokers are also at increased risk of developing cataracts.
4. Wear sunglasses when outdoors
Exposure to UV light for prolonged periods can seriously damage your eyes and even cause retinal burning and blindness. Protect your eyes with some shades if it’s a bright day.
- Sunlight is actually one of the best ways to obtain vitamin D, which provides many health benefits.
- Despite the benefits, we need to keep our skin safe. Learn more here.
5. Keep a safe distance when using the computer or watching TV
Your screen should also be positioned around 20 to 24 inches from your eyes with the center of the screen being 10 to 15 degrees below the line of sight.
Prevent eye strain at work or during leisure by practicing the 20-20-20 rules.
Take breaks by looking up from your screen every 20 minutes and focusing on an object 20 feet (~6 meters) away for 20 seconds.
